First steps to balance—start here!

Phase 1A – Training Steps

Basic balance techniques—get steady.

Balance is the key to biking success, and we’ll build it step by step. Here’s how to help your child feel steady and confident:

  • Pick a safe spot: Choose a flat, open area like a driveway, empty parking lot, or park path.
  • Adjust the seat: Lower it so your child can sit with both feet flat on the ground—it’s their safety net!
  • Ditch the pedals (if you can): Removing them turns the bike into a balance bike, letting your child focus on walking and gliding.
  • Start with walking: Have your child sit on the bike and push forward with their feet. Take it slow—balance comes with practice.
  • Try a glide: Once they’re comfy walking, encourage them to lift their feet for a second or two and glide. Cheer every try!

Tyler’s Tip: Turn it into a game! Set a “finish line” a few feet away and celebrate when they reach it—big smiles guaranteed!

Phase 1B – Turns

Introduce gentle turns—build confidence.

Now that balance is starting to click, let’s add gentle turns to the mix. This helps your child steer and stay in control.

  • Begin with wide turns: Place two cones or soft objects a few feet apart. Have your child walk or glide the bike in a big curve around them.
  • Look ahead: Teach them to look where they want to go—their body will follow naturally.
  • Practice both ways: Try turns to the left and right for well-rounded skills.
  • Offer light support: Stay close and hold the seat if needed, but let them steer as much as they can.

Tyler’s Tip: Make it fun! Challenge them with, “Can you glide around the cone without bumping it?” They’ll love showing off!

Wrapping Up

You’re off to an awesome start! Session 1 is all about building balance and confidence, one step at a time. Keep practicing these basics, and when your child is gliding and turning with ease, you’ll be ready for the next adventure. You’ve got this!
